Meeting the Tigers

$

It wasn’t a time to sit back and relax. Neither a time to slack on a couch nor to feel confidently awesome. It was indeed the moment of truth. The moment that all had been waiting for. The Tigers’ claws to claws, fangs to fangs encounter with Greyhounds.

The Growling Tigers

NCF Tigers brightly growled over series of battles to qualify in the finals of the 8th Naga City Charter Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament held at Jesse M. Robredo Coliseum.

Being a dynamic and enduring basketball team, composed of skilled, talented players equipped with proper trainings and discipline, made 13 wins, while beaten twice, in the elimination round of the tournament. NCF Tigers defeated one of its heaviest rivals, the Ateneo Golden Knights, during the last elimination game favored in the score of 74-73 that lifted them to the finals. It is well noted that the Tigers hardly fought with the Golden Knights in the last year’s basketball championship but failed to snatch the trophy. For this year’s battle for victory, NCF Tigers make close fight with UNC Greyhounds in the wild arena.

Tigers, Greyhounds Claws to Claws

For the best of three, the bullish fight between NCF Tigers and UNC Greyhounds started in the first game set on September 14, 2012 at 6pm. The coliseum, filled with school colors [green, yellow, red and gray], trembled with supporters making noise for each team. Showing great courage and guts, the Tigers swung into action and slammed the Greyhounds. This fighting mechanism made the Tigers ruling in the first game with the end score of 74 points over Greyhounds’ 68 points.

The second match kicked at 7pm on September 17, 2012. Both teams hardly battled but the Greyhounds were conquering the court, giving more strength and might against the Tigers. It was indeed the time that the UNC Greyhounds performed well, proving that they have the spirit of a real greyhound, smashing the Tigers on the floor. The game ended with scores 85-71, the Greyhounds won.

So, Tigers Preyed Greyhounds?

The end of the second game gave the players, coaches and supporters the hope and courage for the championship title. This also gave the fans all the energy to witness the final count. And for each side, meeting the expectation of the audience was as hard as cooling a boiling pot of water.

The JMR Coliseum was at absolute excitement when supporters filled the seats of the sports ground with all the supporting colors, bands and cheer dancers, banners, and props at the night of September 22, 2012 when the big fight was set to kick off.

The Tigers immediately showed their eagerness to win by counting on points at the very beginning of the first quarter. They repeatedly gained points as the second quarter started, scoring far beyond the Greyhounds’ who were then starting to make more points for themselves. Knocking out the UNC Greyhounds, the NCF Tigers continually triumphed over in the third and fourth quarters. The Tigers did it. They flushed the Greyhounds out of the court as they scored 97 total points, 22 points much higher than UNC Greyhounds’ 75 total points at the end of the game. The coliseum quaked as the Tigers roared for their victorious moment with the entire fans. Tigers put the Greyhounds back to their kennels.

Excellence with Class

Last year, NCF Tigers made a brilliant record by incurring a straight win of 16-0 during the elimination round of the same tournament. This is first ever in the records of the Naga City Charter Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament. With the all-time coach of the team, Wesley Villanueva, the tigers consecutively qualified in the championship game making their school, NCF, outshined in such field here in the Naga City and Camarines Sur.

The Tigers have stolen the championship game for this year’s tournament. They have effectively beaten the Ateneo Golden Knights and the UNC Greyhounds, the two biggest rivals. With the help of the coaches Villanueva, and the three others, Edwin Bubus, Lorenzo Alayan, and Efren Avestruz, the team successfully made names for themselves.

Leonel Barde is the year’s Most Valuable Player having himself so proud and happy, saying, “Of course I’m very happy, but I would not have it without the help of my teammates, of the coaching staff, of our manager, and the support of the NCF community.” Time for trainings is very important. The team conducts 3-day   hard practice and 2 days for reviews of plays and planning. “We see to it that we always attend the practice. We go to the gym and make road run… ‘iwas bisyo rin kami at dapat laging with proper sleep’. We make sure that we pray before each game,” Barde said. As a team captain, he also advises his teammates “not forget their studies… attend the practice, and have self discipline… always listen to the coach, and give focus to the game.” The group also enjoys team building and bonding. “It’s teamwork, as long as we play ‘team offense and team defense’… we’ll win,” he added. Barde is now a 3rd year Criminology student who has already spent three years in the varsity team. “I attend summer classes to take my back subjects,” he said when asked about his schoolworks. Barde is also one of the Five Mythical Players of the year together with his teammates Christopher Okpe and Arnaldo Magalong.

A pat on the back is all that the Tigers received right after the game for their triumph.  They are now preparing themselves for the elimination round of the Philippine Collegiate Championship League (PCCL) 2012.

The 66th founding anniversary of the Naga College Foundation this year kicked off with pre-foundation activities prepared by the different sponsoring colleges and units last February 26-27, 2013 and continued in the Grand Opening last February 28, 2013 until March 3, 2013. The week-long celebration was punctuated by exciting and colorful events that transform the campus into a pleasurable hub for the whole NCF community, guests, visitors, alumni, business entrepreneurs and outsiders.

The series of events showcased the historical evolution of the school from a simple Naga Teachers’ College into “a state of the art school” that it now prides itself of. The “brains and brawn” of students were likewise harnessed and brought to the fore.

The  ribbon-cutting ceremony last February 26, 2013 unveiled  the Academic Open House and  the Student’s Achievers Wall of Fame at the Administration Building. Other activities sponsored  by the different colleges followed: CET Skills Olympics, SOCO Seminar-workshop, Demo Teaching, Health and Science Text Twist, Speech Olympics, Movie Marathon, Bazaar and Tiangge Open House.

Last February 28, 2013 a Eucharistic celebration was officiated  by Rev. Fr. Goody C. Rueda, Jr. at the ST Quadrangle. After the Holy Mass, the  NCF community converged and watched  the spectacular field demonstration  of elementary pupils, students and faculty. Their heart-thumping performances wowed the crowd. On the same day, the recital and concert of the NCF Marching Band ensued. The President, Marguerite Michelle V. Padua-Hornby commended Mr. Benjamin Villanueva, chairman of the Board of Tarustees for having been awarded as an Outstanding Bicolano Artist during the Bicol Arts Festival.

Other highlights considered “firsts” in the history of the school were the CWTS Flash Mob, Brain strike, NCF Tigers Run 2013 and the First Provincial ROTC Disaster Rescue Competition.

This year’s Foundation Anniversary celebration culminated in the “Gabi ngParangalparasaEmpleyado”  which spotlighted the achievements of the employees and faculty who have spent  their fruitful years serving the academe.

The 66th NCF Foundation Anniversary bannered the theme: “reinventing ourselves at 66.

NCF Reinvention

When NCF was founded in 1947 by Dr.Melchor T. Villanueva, he only had one dream… to educate the Bicolano youth. Now, we are still standing tall and proud at 66, delivering quality but affordable education to the Bicolanos.

The setting, time and environment in which we operate have drastically changed. Change is happening at such a speed that we find ourselves reeling from all of it. Like the new k+12 basic education curriculum, the fierce competition from government-funded SUCs and LUCs, and even closer to home. The reality that stares us in the face when we go to the classroom everyday—the different type of students we see these days, the uninterested and apathetic students who would rather be somewhere else than in the classroom. Who would rather be surfing the net, fiddling with their phones and gadgets than listening to their teachers. But are they really uninterested? Or do we just fail to enthrall, captivate and inspire them? Yes, times have changed and our students have changed. They are discriminating and demanding. If we don’t change ourselves; we might be rendered irrelevant and unimportant in the eyes of our students.

This is why we chose the anniversary theme, “reinventing ourselves”.

Reinvention means recreating ourselves, having a makeover, changing our mindsets, shifting our paradigms. It is changing the way we think, the way we see things and do our job in order to achieve better results.

How is NCF reinventing itself? In July last year, we reinvented ourselves by opening up the Board of Trustees to external independent board members. We have three new board members from the academe and industry. Dr. Roman, former University of the Philippines president, Dr.Morato, Former dean of the AIM and now head of the Asian Center for Entrepreneurship and Bayan Academy and Mr. Hwang, San Miguel Breweries president. In July this year, we will also welcome another new Board member, Bro. Dennis Magbanua, President of De La Salle College of St. Benilde.

For the Basic Education Department, we have expressed our intent to become a DeLaSalle supervised school. They were here for a visit just this February 27-28. We are hoping that they will accept us into the Lasallian Schools Supervison Office (LASSO) community.

My Reinvention

NCF’s reinvention will not be complete if we do not reinvent ourselves. We are part of NCF, we are the vital organs of NCF, and so if we do not reinvent ourselves, NCF as an institution will not flourish.

It will take a lot of reflecting and thinking by looking deep into ourselves and analyzing how we could improve and change for the better.

As teachers, we could try to understand better how students want to learn. How do we get their attention? How do we prepare and present our lessons to them so that we get their undivided attention? How do we captivate and fascinate them? Hence, if we facilitate better their learning, they will really learn from us.

For the non-teaching personnel, how do we deliver our services? Are we still as customer-friendly as before? Even if we have held the same position for many years, we can still improve the processes we have, we can improve our systems, we can find new ways to shorten our delivery time or processing time, so that in the end, we exceed students’ expectations

For the administrators, how do we lead so we could inspire our people? How do we improve our policies and our environment?

The struggle

To reinvent ourselves is a very difficult task. To some, it is daunting to even think of changing because it is easier to live or stay within our comfort zones but here lies the beauty of our struggles.

If we are struggling right now it’s because we are undergoing a lot of change. If we need to finish QMS documents, our manuals of operations, it is because it will make our lives easier in the future. If we feel we are swamped with work, it’s because we are doing whatever it is we were supposed to be doing from the start but have them put off for a long time. It means so much is being required of us now because we are not stagnant, we are growing, and we are developing.

To struggle means we are growing… for those of you who work really hard and have passion in what you do, you will find that you do not only help the school directly by your actions, but you have helped yourself become a better, stronger, fulfilled person. We are always busy, we are tired, but we are fulfilled, because we know we have given our best in our jobs, we delivered more than what is needed.

In the process of giving our best and testing our fires, it’s like we are gold being purified, becoming the best we can ever be.

May we all continue growing together!
